Coping Stress during the COVID Pandemic

Over the past year and a half, COVID has changed the way we live. It has definitely been a hard time for everyone trying to adapt to the new “normal” lifestyle of wearing masks everywhere we go, to staying at home to limit the curve, to limiting our contact with others through social distancing. This has led many of us to feel isolated and alone due to the great reduction in physical interactions, which inevitably reduces the majority of social interactions as well. Especially during these harsh times, it is important to take care of your mental health.

Here are some actions you can take to cope with stress:

  1. Limit your intake on news about COVID

→ It is beneficial to stay informed on the state of the province and receive any updates about provincial-wide lockdowns. However, hearing about the number of cases and deaths caused by COVID can be overwhelming. Thus, ensure to take breaks throughout the day from social media and news channels.

2. Physical distancing does not equal social distancing!

→ It is crucial to continue to talk to loved ones so you can remind yourself that you are not alone. Although you shouldn’t talk to them in person, call their phone, get on facetime/zoom, use social media!

3. Maintain good physical health! Physical and mental health go hand-in-hand.

→ This can be done by going for a walk to clear your mind. Exercising releases dopamine which is a feel-good hormone that will make you feel better not only physically, but mentally too.

→ Stay hydrated and get enough sleep! Being well-rested will allow you to feel calm and allow you to think clearly.

It is completely normal to feel scared about something that we are unfamiliar with, but no need to do it alone! If you find yourself up at night stressing about COVID, consider speaking to your family doctor, as they may be able to prescribe some medications, such as Wellbutrin (which is commonly used to reduce anxiety) to keep yourself calm. Guildview Pharmacy is also always here to help by providing more information about how to stay safe during this pandemic, as well as, recommend any medications that can allow you to live a healthy life.
