Coping with COVID-19 – Physical Health

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a change in many people’s lives. Because of the pandemic it can be increasingly difficult to maintain a healthy routine. This can cause for a major decline in your physical health. Many of us find ourselves losing track of time during quarantine.

The following are some factors that can lead to a decline in our physical health:

Minimal Physical Activity – As many of the gyms in our area are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is harder to find the motivation to work out. While running around in our backyards is a possibility, many of those who live in apartments do not have this option.

Substance Abuse – Many of those who are experiencing isolation and are away from their families turn to substance use. This includes excess drinking of alcohol, use of marijuana and other substances.

Improper Sleeping Habits – As mentioned before, many of us are beginning to lose track of time during quarantine. This can cause for late sleeping and waking habits, which leads to a lack in motivation.

Eating Unhealthy Foods – While in quarantine, many of us feel that our self-control is at an all-time low. With food just around the corner and limited options available at the grocery store, many of us turn to the fast, easy (most of time) unhealthy foods. Let’s face it, we all have cravings!

Maintaining a healthy routine can be fun and improve both physical and mental health. In addition, it can help us feel more motivated and help time go by faster while in quarantine. Here are some ways to get back on a healthy routine:

  1. Practice Mindful Eating – Be aware of what you are putting into your body, you can choose to eat food that not only make you feel happy but nourish your body too. Before eating, take 5 deep breaths to prepare your body and mind. This will calm your body and keep you in the present. Take this time while in quarantine, to try out different alternatives to your regular meals and new recipes. This will not only introduce you to new culinary experiences, it will also provide new healthy alternatives too!
  2. Avoid Substance Abuse – Instead of turning to substance use during times of isolation, reach out to friends and family through online platforms (video chat, telephone, email, and texts).
  3. Stay Active – Moderation is key, slowly integrate physical activity in your routine. While the gyms may be closed, there are many online videos that can help you stay physically active at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of that many of these resources are entirely free! In addition, taking daily walks, dancing to some music at home or stretching on your balcony can help relieve stress and increase physical activity.
  4. Maintain Proper Sleeping Habits – While a drastic change in your sleep schedule can cause you to be extra tired in the mornings, gradually going to sleep and waking earlier (in 30 mins intervals) can help you get back on a proper sleep schedule.
